Worms will not eat living wood where the vital sap is
flowing; rust will not hinder the opening of a gate when
the hinges are used each day. Movement gives health
and life. Stagnation brings disease and death.
– Chinese Medicine proverb
A subluxation is an area of stagnation: stagnated nerve
impulses, energy and body structures. The job of the
chiropractor is to locate and correct subluxations, per-mitting energy, healing and life to flow.
Why don’t chiropractors get consistently fabulous
results? Why do we fail with some patients? Why do
others stop making progress (plateau)? The answer,
in many cases, is that we fail to address the fact that
subluxations are state (and posture) specific.
Chiropractors often adjust people while they are lying on a table – but who gets subluxated lying on a
table? Too often – after the patient gets off the table
and moves, bends and turns – the pain, limitation and
dysfunction, in short, their subluxations, reappear.
Why is that? It’s because subluxations can be sneaky
little things. They can hide in our posture and in our
movement; they can hide in our thoughts as we enter
different mental states.
Life is motion and some subluxations only reveal
themselves while a person is in motion – moving,
walking, sitting, standing, in an odd position; Koren
by Tedd Koren, D.C.
Specific Technique (KST) refers to this as the posture
of subluxation (POS).
Ignoring the POS can lead to frustration in clinical
practice. We see it all the time: the patient gets a great
table adjustment but when they get up they still are in
pain or dysfunction when they move a certain way.
Subluxations can be emotional. For example, a person
in a stressful marriage may subluxate when they think
of their spouse, a person suffering from allergies may
subluxate when they think about their allergy, a child
with dyslexia may subluxate when trying to read.
We’ve found that adjusting subluxations while the person is thinking about someone who causes an emotional
stress, thinking about an allergy or trying to read could
break the “reflex” that causes stress and their relationship, allergy or dyslexia may completely resolve.
We repeatedly find that for the most successful care, a
chiropractor should check and adjust patients as they
assume different postures so as to reveal their hidden
subluxations.
This begs the question – how do you find those hidden
subluxations? To do that you need to do a little detective work.
Patient: “Doctor, it hurts when I do that.”
Doctor: “So don’t do that.”
That joke notwithstanding, we want patients to “do
that.”
Some POS are obvious: if a person was injured in an
auto accident you may need to check and adjust them
as they are sitting (if you want to get dramatic you can
put their hands on an imaginary steering wheel). Then
check and adjust what is revealed.
